A More Inclusive Community Starts Here
Our mentor program provides middle school and high school students with experiences that will provide them with a better understanding of those who have exceptionalities and learning differences. It is our hope to guide our next generation of leaders through inclusive and health-minded opportunities. These years in particular are a pivotal time for pre-teens and teenagers to begin looking inward at their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions toward themselves and the world around them.
Our mentor program invites students to participate in our individualized and group programs. Through their support, our mentors learn important values, broaden their understandings, and create meaningful connections. Our mentors focus on the following objectives.
Encouragement:
Strive toward being enthusiastic and creative in helping students
Help participants as they try to participate in activities, games, or projects
Initiative:
When the opportunity arises, take charge when help is needed
Optimism:
Regardless of the activity or topic, try to be optimistic, positive, and upbeat
Lead by example, be a model for others
Engagement:
Be diligent with assisting participants through activities
Be aware of the participant’s strengths, weaknesses, dislikes, and likes
Work toward building relationships with participants
Flexibility and Patience:
Try your best to go with the flow with all activities, topics, or lessons - even if they shift or pivot
Try your best to understand that situations don’t go as planned
When it is taking a bit to understand a concept or complete a task, be willing to work with participants at their pace
Responsibility and Accountability:
Follow the coach’s instructions
Ask questions if directions are unclear
Be present with participants
Remain on track and remember session intentions and goals
